Spring is Right Around the Corner: Chimney Checklist

Ahh. You can almost smell the sweet fragrance of vibrant pink and blue hyacinths and other beautiful perennials that bloom across the Cumberland Valley, signaling the arrival of spring. It’s also the time of year when many Pennsylvanians are getting ready for their spring-cleaning chores so that they can enjoy the gorgeous weather outdoors. However, before you go hiking along the Appalachian Trail, be sure to complete your chimney checklist.

Why Spring Is the Best Time for Cleaning Your Chimney

The recent bone-chilling winter, which brought periods of heavy snow, snow showers, and rain, battered many chimneys across south-central PA. These conditions aren’t just a challenge for masonry; they are also difficult for local wildlife. Flying squirrels, raccoons, and even mice often seek shelter in a warm, cozy chimney during the freeze, leaving behind debris that can become a fire hazard or a health risk.

Spring Cleaning Prevents Summer Chimney Problems

Sweeping the chimney in the summer can prevent several unpleasant seasonal issues:

-Chimney Fires: Lightning strikes from summer storms can ignite flammable creosote buildup, sparking a dangerous chimney fire that could quickly spread throughout the entire house. It’s more common than you think.

-Structural Issues: Heavy summer storms worsen existing masonry damage, potentially leading to a costly collapse.

-Poor Air Quality: Foul odors from decaying organic matter, creosote buildup, and soot can permeate your house as the air warms up, reducing air quality.

-Health Hazards: Mold and mildew in the chimney flue can enter your home through air vents, ducts, and damper gaps that can trigger allergies and respiratory issues.

Your Spring Cleaning Checklist:

-Check your chimney’s exterior brick or stone and note any damage, such as eroding mortar, cracked, or missing bricks, and gaps for your chimney sweep.

-Look up at the chimney cap to make sure it’s still there.

-Scrub the firebox, including the grate, walls, and floor, with a solution of equal parts vinegar and distilled water.

-Sweep the ash into a metal container with a tight lid and store it several feet away from your home and combustible materials.

-Consider recycling your wood ash in your garden as a nutrient-rich soil additive or mixing it into your compost pile.

-Clean the glass doors to remove stains and ensure an unobstructed view of the flames during the next burn season. You can use the same solution you used in your fireplace.
