How to Clean a Masonry Fire Pit in 5 Steps

A masonry fire pit can be a stunning addition to any backyard or outdoor living space. It provides a cozy, warm space to gather around with your friends and family throughout the year.

At the same time, ash and debris accumulate in the pit after every use, which can detract from the classic beauty of the masonry. Aside from visual appeal, keeping your fire pit clean is crucial for ensuring it lasts.

How to Clean a Fire Pit After Use

While masonry fire pits are incredibly durable, they still require regular cleaning and maintenance. If you're wondering how to clean a fire pit after use, follow these five steps for effective results.

1. Preparation

Before cleaning, wear gloves, a long-sleeved shirt, pants and safety goggles. Protective clothes and eyewear are necessary because you will be handling muriatic acid, which can be harmful to your skin and eyes without proper protection.

2. Remove Ash and Debris

Ash can continue to smolder well after a fire has been put out, so you must leave the fire pit to cool for a day or two. When cleaning ash out of a fire pit, you can scoop out the debris with a shovel. Remove all the ash and debris until the fire pit is clear.

3. Use a Cleaning Solution

To make a cleaning solution for your masonry fire pit, pour 10 parts water and 1 part muriatic acid into a container. Always add the water to the container first to prevent any chance of a chemical reaction. Use a glass or acid-resistant container to make this solution.

4. Scrub

Wet the surface with water before you begin. Then, use a durable brush and the muriatic acid cleaning solution to scrub the interior and exterior of the fire pit. It is important to work slowly when using the solution to avoid any spills. This method with the muriatic acid solution is also effective for cleaning a rusty fire pit.

5. Rinse the Fire Pit and Leave It to Dry

After scrubbing, you can use a garden hose to rinse the fire pit and leave it to dry for two or three days.
