Fire Prevention Week 2024

While fireplaces and wood stoves create a warm and inviting environment, they can pose significant fire hazards if they are not cleaned properly. Chimney fires are common here in the Keystone State, often caused by creosote buildup, a byproduct of burning wood. Creosote can ignite, leading to a chimney fire that can spread to the rest of the house and nearby dwellings. That is why fire safety experts say having your chimney inspected and cleaned annually by a certified professional is essential.

Keystone’s Fireplace and Stove, a local family-owned and operated business, is committed to fireplace safety. We proudly observe Fire Prevention Week with the Chimney Safety Institute of America (CSIA) and the National Fire Protection Association®. The theme of NFPA’s 2024 Fire Prevention Week is “Smoke Alarms: Make Them Work For You!” Keep your home safe by ensuring a operational smoke detector is installed in each bedroom. Then implement a monthly testing schedule. Also, remember that all smoke detectors need to be replaced every ten years.

What is Creosote and Why is It Dangerous?

Creosote is a natural byproduct of combustion created by the wood-burning process. As smoke and gases expel up the flue, creosote condenses and sticks to the masonry and other components inside the chimney. As the creosote lingers in the flue, it becomes dark, tarry, and flammable. It is the leading cause of house fires in the Commonwealth during the winter. While a small amount is normal, an 1/8” of buildup or more is a significant fire and health hazard.

The Three Stages of Creosote

Unlike a fine wine that gets better with age, creosote grows increasingly dangerous as it moves through the following three stages:

  • Stage 1: This initial layer is a light, brown glaze that may resemble an oil slick. It is easily removed with regular sweeping.
  • Stage 2: As creosote accumulates, it becomes thicker, darker, and more difficult to remove.
  • Stage 3: This is the most dangerous stage. The creosote becomes a thick, crusty layer that is highly flammable and typically requires professional removal. It poses a severe risk of fire and exposure to poisonous carbon monoxide exhaust.

How to Minimize Creosote Buildup

Fortunately, there are several ways to minimize creosote buildup in your chimney and reduce its associated risks while you enjoy the warmth of the hearth.

Burn Seasoned Wood

Use seasoned firewood dried for at least six months. Seasoned wood burns hotter resulting in a more complete combustion. It creates less smoke, creosote, and pollution compared to unseasoned wood. This not only reduces the risk of chimney fires but also helps to maintain better air quality in your home. Some local firewood you can try are Ash, Oak, and Locust.

Open the Damper

Ensure the damper is fully open before lighting the fireplace. After the fire gets going, you can slightly close the damper to reduce fuel consumption while achieving a clean, hot burn. Also, keep the glass fireplace doors shut or use a spark screen to prevent sparks from landing on combustible materials like flooring, carpeting, rugs, and furnishings.

Schedule Professional Inspections & Cleaning

The NFPA recommends annual chimney inspections by a certified technician, even if you don’t use the fireplace. Schedule annual cleanings with a certified chimney sweep to remove creosote buildup and obstructions before they become a significant problem.
