Can You Install Your Own Fireplace?

The easy answer to this question is probably not. The more thorough answer is, yes, you can, if you know what you’re doing and understand a lot about drafting physics, clearances, gas line connections, chimney chase construction and local building code regulations.

Where will you install the fireplace in your home?

If you buy a manufactured fireplace, you’ll have to open a space in a wall somewhere in your home. The company that made the unit will specify the minimal acceptable clearance between the appliance and home materials.

You’ll need to set up a drafting chase to house the fireplace’s vent pipe. Chases are attached outside the home near where the fireplace is installed.

You can set up a heating stove in most rooms as long as there’s a way to extend the vent pipe to the outside of the house.

If you’re installing a gas fireplace or stove, you’ll have to run a gas line and connect it to the appliance.

Installing a fireplace insert

Fireplace insert installation is a little more basic. Inserts that burn gas or wood are placed into the firebox of an existing fireplace, usually an open masonry fireplace.

The right insert size is important, and so is setting up the vent pipe in the existing chimney. This work needs to be done according to spec.

For gas inserts, a safe gas line connection is required.

Code-compliant installation

Cities and towns throughout Pennsylvania (and all other states) have municipal and county building codes that govern how fireplaces are to be installed. There are also code requirements mandated at state levels throughout the United States.

If you’re not familiar with these codes, you need to become familiar with them before attempting to install a new fireplace. Failure to follow code specifications can result in a dangerous appliance and fines down the line for code violations.

On top of all that, the fireplace or stove manufacturer will have outlined a variety of specifications to follow when installing the appliance. This information is often presented in a lot of complicated text in the unit’s owner’s manual. Trained fireplace installers understand the instructions. Most homeowners don’t.

Final test and operation

After the installation work is done, the appliance should be tested. Professional fireplace technicians know the many things to watch for during the initial operation to make sure everything is running right and performing as it should.
